چکیده

[1] In this report we analyze airborne measurements to suggest that methanol in biomass burning smoke is lost heterogeneously in clouds. When a smoke plume intersected a cumulus cloud during the SAFARI 2000 field project, the observed methanol gas phase concentration rapidly declined. Current understanding of gas and aqueous phase chemistry cannot explain the loss of methanol documented by these measurements. Two plausible heterogeneous reactions are proposed to explain the observed simultaneous loss and production of methanol and formaldehyde, respectively. If the rapid heterogeneous processing of methanol, seen in a cloud impacted by smoke, occurs in more pristine clouds, it could affect the oxidizing capacity of the troposphere on a global scale.

Ozone Destruction in Continental Stratus Clouds: Experimental Evidence for Heterogeneous Chemistry

There is considerable interest in studying tropospheric ozone because of its role as a greenhouse gas and as a key element in tropospheric chemistry. Heterogeneous chemistry involving reactions with aerosols and cloud droplets can affect O3 in a number of ways. The results of model studies show that aqueous phase chemistry is shown to decrease ozone concentrations significantly in the troposphe...

Heterogeneous Chemistry and Tropospheric Ozone

Ozone is produced in the troposphere by gas-phase oxidation of hydrocarbons and CO catalyzed by hydrogen oxide radicals (HOx ≡ OH + H + peroxy radicals) and nitrogen oxide radicals (NOx ≡ NO+NO2). Heterogeneous chemistry involving reactions in aerosol particles and cloud droplets may affect O3 concentrations in a number of ways including production and loss of HOx and NOx, direct loss of O3, an...

PSC and tropospheric clouds during winter 2007/2008

This discussion paper is/has been under review for the journal Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics (ACP). Please refer to the corresponding final paper in ACP if available. Abstract The type of Polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) as well as their temporal and spatial extent are important for the occurrence of heterogeneous reactions in the polar stratosphere. The formation of PSCs depends strongly ...
